Articular disc
A dense fibrous disc between the mandibular condyle and the temporal bone that divides each joint into upper and lower compartments.
Function
Allows smooth rotation and gliding and distributes load across the joint.
Clinical relevance
Displacement of the disc is a common cause of joint clicking. The disc shown is schematic.
