Gingiva
The gums: the part of the oral mucosa that covers the alveolar processes and surrounds the necks of the teeth.
Function
Protects the underlying periodontal tissues and forms a seal around each tooth.
Clinical relevance
Inflammation of the gingiva (gingivitis) is reversible; it can progress to periodontitis with loss of attachment and bone.
