Inferior alveolar nerve
A branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (V3). It enters the mandibular foramen and runs through the mandibular canal beneath the roots of the lower teeth.
Function
Sensation to the mandibular teeth; gives off the mental nerve and continues as the incisive nerve.
Clinical relevance
Anaesthetised by the inferior alveolar nerve block. Its proximity to third molar roots and to implant sites makes it a key structure to avoid in surgery. The path follows the Z-Anatomy atlas, fitted to this skull.
