Mental foramen
An opening on the outer surface of the mandible, usually near the apices of the premolars, through which the mental nerve and vessels emerge.
Clinical relevance
Its location is important in premolar surgery, implant placement and mental nerve blocks. The position is where the atlas nerve path crosses the bone surface.
Location
On the outer mandible in the premolar region, commonly between the first and second premolars or below the second premolar. Position varies between individuals and populations; “between 4 and 5” is not a fixed rule.
